Why Rock Band Will Never Get All Of Who’s Next Album

Who's Next Album CoverWhen Harmonix announced that the first DLC album would be Judas Priest’s “Screaming For Vengance”, mysellf and countless others wondered what happened to “Who’s Next” as that was supposed to be the first DLC album released.  After much speculation and no communication on the issue from Harmonix, it appears that we may finally have an answer as to why it hasn’t been released yet.

According to an interview with Pete Townsand on February 1st, 2008, the possibility of ever playing a master version of “Baba O’Riley” in Rock Band is about zero to none.

johnmcdonald: Back in 2004 Tommy was remixed for the 5.1 DVD-Audio format. At the
time, rumours suggested that you were working on 5.1 mixes for the other albums, such as
Who’s Next and Quadrophenia. Are these remixes ever likely to be released?

PETE: That’s right. I gave up on Quadrophenia as I decided I really want to re-record a
director’s cut of it (the way Jean Michel Jarre has just done with Oxygene). One day I
will do this if I get time. Who’s Next, it turns out, is no longer a complete set of masters.
An entire side has been stolen from our vaults at some point. These things happen.
Someone, somewhere, has it in a cupboard and is waiting for us to die? What then?

Unless Harmonix is the one that recently came across some “Who’s Next” master tapes, the best that we’ll ever see from that masterpiece of an album is side two.
